Responsibilities :
Job Summary:
Risk management will be central to environmental and social progress in the coming decades as we face the interconnected global challenges of climate change, widespread biodiversity loss, and worsening inequality. Households and firms, communities and countries, all face rapidly escalating physical risks, as well as transition risks. Insurance and risk transfer will be critical to enabling economic change, directing capital toward sustainable futures, facilitating needed investments, and providing inclusive and equitable financial protection.
 

EDF has a growing program of work on insurance and climate risk management across the organization. This work focuses on the insurance sector, insurance as a financial tool, and insurance-adjacent activities. Topically, this work spans the role of insurance in both climate mitigation and adaptation. Many of the projects have a focus on equity in climate adaptation or in supporting a just transition.
 

To support this emerging work, the Economics team at EDF seeks a highly motivated, exceptionally organized, and analytically rigorous Climate and Insurance Fellow to provide project management support and research capacity for several new initiatives at EDF at the intersection of risk transfer markets and climate change.
 

The Manager will primarily provide research and policy analysis support, but also will have some project management duties. The candidate must have a strong background in social science research principles and practices. This role will support both qualitative and basic quantitative analyses depending on their skillset. The candidate must be an excellent written communicator as they will contribute to drafting and editing written outputs for various audiences, including reports, academic papers, and blogs.
 

They will also oversee, plan, organize and communicate around several related projects. These projects will cross multiple teams at EDF and thus requires a high level of organization on the part of the fellow. In addition to data analysis and qualitative research, the role may also involve coordinating meetings, managing relationships, tracking action items, and serving as a point of contact for internal and external partners.
 

This role will report to the Associate Vice President for Economics and Policy. The position will work with other EDF experts across multiple teams, as well as partners in academia and the public and private sector. The role will require limited travel to meetings and workshops.
 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Work independently and with other team members on policy analysis and both quantitative and qualitative research studies. This could include literature reviews, case studies, data cleaning and analysis, data visualization, interviews, or use of other qualitative methods.
  • Collaborate with other members of the team and with external partners on related economic and policy work.
  • Help write and prepare reports, policy briefs, and blogs.
  • Apply excellent organizational, communication, and planning skills in preparing correspondence and reports, responding to requests for information, and helping to coordinate activities among staff members.
  • Support the planning of meetings, including preparing agendas, taking notes, and following up on action items.
  • Support the organizing of meetings, workshops, and events with external collaborators.
  • Track progress on projects through the use of project management software, task lists, and timelines.
  • Support thought leadership on these topics through a wide range of publication types.
  • Engage with a variety of stakeholders to solicit expertise and respond to inquiries.
 

Qualifications
We are seeking candidates with strong project management skills, who are extremely organized and who have a demonstrated ability to conduct rigorous analysis in the area of climate, insurance, and risk management. Candidates should have:
  • Master’s-level degree (or PhD) in economics, risk management, public policy, or a closely related field plus multiple years of work experience;
  • Background in insurance and climate change preferred; background in at least one of the following required: insurance and risk transfer, risk management, climate adaptation, or climate resilience;
  • Prior research experience and excellent analytical skills;
  • Prior management experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive of, plan, and manage the implementation of complex projects in support of programmatic goals;
  • Highly proficient in Excel and, preferably, also one statistical analysis software, such as R;
  • Excellent written communication skills, including public-facing materials;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively synthesize and communicate basic technical and policy findings in a clear and concise manner;
  • Highly organized;
  • Ability to think strategically, work efficiently, and meet project deadlines;
  • Proficient at conducting group meetings, and communicating complex ideas to a general audience;
  • Effective presenter in large and small groups;
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and able to multi-task under tight deadlines;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and participate in research efforts that include collaboration with and/or supervision of outside experts and consultants;
  • Keen attention to detail to ensure consistency and quality of outputs;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English;
  • Demonstrated ability to support a multi-disciplinary team, using independent judgment required to plan, prioritize, and organize a diversified workload;
  • Highly motivated;
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.

EDF’s Economics Team Overview
The Economics Team is the nexus of economics at EDF, ensuring that the economic thinking that is the backbone for all EDF policy positions is based on the best available research and information. To be most effective in this role, the Office of the Chief Economist provides support for other teams throughout EDF and fosters relationships with economists outside the organization.
