Job Summary/Purpose:


Reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Major and Institutional Giving Officer will play an instrumental role in the Handel and Haydn Society's fundraising efforts with major gifts and institutional giving. They will build and manage a dynamic portfolio of approximately 80-100 donors and prospects, focusing on generating and sustaining individual major gifts of $10,000 to $100,000, as well as special campaign gifts ranging $100,000 to $1,000,000. They will oversee institutional support and manage and execute all aspects of the corporate, foundation, and government fundraising program to achieve annual and special project goals,


The Major and Institutional Giving Officer will be part of a development team that works collaboratively and across the organization. They will work closely with the Vice President of Development, the fellow Major and Planned Giving Officer, and President/CEO to implement ongoing major gift and institutional initiatives and fulfill annual goals outlined by the Development plan, which is in line with the H+H Strategic Plan and You Are the Music comprehensive campaign. The Major and Institutional Giving Officer will be crucial in executing and providing strategic support for front-line major gift solicitations. They will have the acumen and flexibility to work productively and with impact from home and at the H+H office, with the expectation of frequent local and regional travel. H+H has built a flexible and engaging culture, including organization closure on Fridays during the summer and flexible work week hours when attending weekend and evening concerts and events.

 



Primary Duties and Responsibilities:


Major Gifts


  • Manage and grow a prospect portfolio to 80-100 individual prospects as primary contact, acting as an externally facing fundraiser while collaborating with colleagues and volunteers for further engagement of donors. Responsible for developing new relationships through proactive outreach. Develop and implement overall strategies for engagement, solicitation, cultivation, and coordination of all follow-up steps with a goal to increase the number of gifts, donors, and revenue at major giving levels ($10,000-$100,000 annual; $100,000+ special).
  • Execute an average of 8-10 donor and prospect visits per month, virtually or in-person, and distribute detailed contact reports on a timely basis.
  • Collaborate with the President/CEO, VP of Development, fellow MGO, and other development staff members to determine best strategies for major gift prospects.
  • Attend H+H concerts, special events, and Board meetings and assist events team by attending and engaging prospects at events involving major donors.
  • Play a key role in the execution of the comprehensive campaign, including assessment of donor pipeline and portfolio goals.
  • Coordinate significant donor communications, event invitations, and other stewardship pieces in collaboration with other team members.
  • Participate in drafting donor proposals for major initiatives within the strategic plan.
  • Draft major gift acknowledgement letters for portfolio of donors and others as needed.
  • Assist in projecting and tracking multi-year gift solicitations, write and distribute stewardship reports where appropriate, and provide progress reports for senior staff, volunteers, and the Board as needed.
  • Collaborate on high level strategy and communications support, including drafting annual major gifts plan, Board reports, CEO and Board communications, and solicitation strategies, as well as ongoing forecasting and creation of gift tables.
  • Execute other major gifts and related duties as may be required.


Institutional Giving


  • Develop and execute, with the VP of Development, overall strategy and plans for corporate, foundation, and government funding for H+H.
  • Serve as the primary grants contact for H+H both internally and externally; actively cultivate and steward relationships with key institutional contacts.
  • Manage an active portfolio of corporate, foundation, and government funders and prospects, including major individual donors with private or family foundations.
  • Meet annual goal of approximately $1,000,000, in addition to special projects and campaign as needed.
  • Generate funding proposals, reports, and correspondence for all institutional donors.
  • Manage projects and deadlines related to all grant proposals and reports.
  • Build and strengthen the corporate partnership program and ensure fulfillment of sponsorship benefits.
  • Seek and develop corporate and foundation relationships for H+H, staying current with these donors and prospects and keeping updated on giving trends and priorities.
  • Meet with H+H Board members to explore their institutional networks and open doors to funding opportunities.
  • Research new funding opportunities for both short- and long-term institutional goals and to grow the institutional giving program.
  • Ensure proactive, effective, and timely communication and coordination with appropriate staff members and departments in the development of proposals and in stewardship of current and prospective funders. Specifically:
  • Work with VP of Development and President/CEO to develop strategies to advance new and existing partnerships.
  • Work with Chief Operating Officer and Finance team to produce appropriate budgets and financial reports for funders.
  • Collaborate closely with the Learning department and VP for Strategic Partnerships to formulate proposals and reports as well as evaluation/data collection related to H+H's education/community engagement programs.
  • Work with VP of Artistic Planning and Concert Production, VP of Marketing and Communications, Director of Patron Experience, and other Marketing staff for related proposals, reports, and sponsorship benefits.
  • Collaborate with the Development Associate in entering and tracking gifts in H+H's database and acknowledging institutional contributions.
  • Update and track contact information and interactions with institutions in the Tessitura database.
  • Manage the institutional giving budget and create financial forecasts for grants as well as for regular internal reporting and planning.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with five years of directly related experience is preferred.
  • Non-profit and/or performing arts experience preferred.

  • Highly proactive individual with a proven track record of managing a donor portfolio and developing and executing successful cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record in researching funding opportunities, grant writing and reporting, with success at meeting goals.
  • Working knowledge of and interest in campaigns is highly desired.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, and project management skills.
  • Excellent project management skills and expertise in fundraising Customer Relations Management systems (CRMs), familiarity with the Tessitura donor base system a plus. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google G Suite/Workspace.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and the willingness to meet unexpected demands with attention to detail and quality.
  • Ability to succeed in a creative and dynamic culture and to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of donor confidentiality.
  • Experience with Board volunteer management and the ability to maintain a high level of diplomacy.
  • Availability to attend and staff H+H concerts and events during evening and weekend hours as needed.
