The Jed Foundation (JED) is a nonprofit organization that focuses on emotional health and suicide prevention for our nation’s teens and young adults. The People & Equity team at JED is seeking an experienced Director of Human Resources to ensure the seamless delivery of HR services to JED staff. As a primary point of contact for Human Resources, this role responds promptly to employee needs and works closely with department leaders to implement key initiatives effectively. The Director is also responsible for ensuring HR practices are compliant with organizational policies, and state and federal regulations. Working across all levels of the organization, the Human Resources Director plays a pivotal role in fostering engagement, collaboration, and an inclusive culture.
Key Responsibilities
Oversees processes for the full employee cycle including onboarding, performance management, and offboarding to ensure a positive employee experience.
- Serves as a main Human Resources liaison to staff members, ensuring timely response to staff member requests and smooth delivery of HR services. Under the direction of the Chief of People & Equity, develops plans and strategies for programs and key initiatives, presenting recommendations for efficiency and continuous improvement. Partners with department leaders on the smooth rollout of key HR initiatives; coaches managers on various HR best practices such as staffing plans, job descriptions, performance management, identifying and addressing employee needs, and advising on staff departures. Manages employee relations, fielding complaints, leading investigations; escalating HR/legal issues to Chief of People & Equity as appropriate. Cultivates employee engagement, including the facilitation of employee surveys; activities that boost employee engagement including plans for in-person, remote, and hybrid organizational events/staff meetings. Partners with the Chief of People & Equity on strategies for professional development and training needs. Pays special attention to efforts that support inclusive environments, including promoting inclusive and equitable practices in hiring and other employment decisions. Works within the department and PEO to manage employee leave of absence requests. Supports the Chief of People & Equity with reporting and project management.
- Provides backup support and redundancy for core HR systems and processes.
Other Duties
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Attend full JED staff meetings.
- Attend other JED programming and events when possible.
- Serve on JED committees/projects as needed and as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Bachelors or Masters in Human Resource Management, Organizational Development, or related field; SHRM certification or similar experience
- 5-7 years of experience in a role as an HR Director, senior-level partner, or similar role Proven track record of rolling out HR initiatives and working with all levels of the organization Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple tasks at a given time, organize time effectively, and respond to changing deadlines Excellent written and verbal communication skills; including organizational staff communications; proven ability to handle employee relations matters and de-escalating situations Demonstrated effectiveness in a team setting and self-driven/independent motivation Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with many moving parts Maintain confidentiality and work in a professional manner Exemplifies strong alignment to JED’s guiding principles including, as well as high flexibility and adaptability. Experience successfully rolling out and navigating HR systems Must have mastery of MS Office 365 Suite (Word, Teams, Powerpoint, etc) and advanced excel experience; experience using project management software e.g. Asana is preferred
- Some knowledge and experience with payroll preferred

Pay Ranges:
The range listed on this job posting is based on JED's compensation posting ranges. Salaries may be higher or lower depending on experience and geographic location.
Location/Travel Information:
Please note that this is a hybrid position, based in the NYS Tri-State Area (maximum 90-minutes proximity). While primarily remote, the role involves attending certain business meetings, retreats, and other events in-person, with additional travel as requested.
