We are a nonprofit and advocacy organization focused on saving lives and preventing gun violence. We also understand and respect that firearms are a part of many Oregonians’ lifestyles and families.
We know most Oregonians share values of wanting to keep their kids, families, neighbors and friends safe. We are all devastated when we lose someone we love to gun suicide or gun homicide, and none of us want to worry about a mass shooting or school shooting in our daily lives.
We support policies and laws that are evidence based to reduce and prevent gun violence while respecting the rights of our state’s many responsible gun owners. We partner with a wide range of organizations and communities across our state, working to bridge the needs of urban and rural Oregonians, youth, veterans, law enforcement and communities of color who are most impacted by gun violence.
Program Manager / Director Position
We are searching for a team member to lead our Firearm Suicide Prevention program. In Oregon, 80% of our gun deaths are firearm suicides. Those in our rural and small town communities suffer the most from gun suicide, as well as our veterans and native communities. We know gun suicide is preventable - this program aims to work alongside firearm owners in our rural and small town communities to ensure firearms are stored securely.
The person in this role will lead the development of a pilot program to distribute secure storage devices and support the development of a messaging campaign to encourage higher rates of secure storage among firearm owners.
Responsibilities
- Program planning and monitoring: In partnership with community stakeholders, build program goals and work plans for our Firearm Suicide Prevention program. The person in this role will ensure firearm owners are helping create and lead solutions for their own communities.
- Firearm Suicide Working Group Facilitation & Stakeholder Relationship Building: Recruit, manage, and facilitate a working group of key stakeholders within nonprofits, local government, health care, schools, and community leaders to develop a scaled approach to secure storage distribution.
- Advocacy: Develop relationships with state and local leaders. In partnership with the Executive Director, create a strategy and plan to advocate for and increase funding to increase secure storage in Oregon. Based on community goals, advocate for other state and local policies and public investments. Help set and pass policy agendas that reflect the experience of firearm owners and those most impacted by firearm suicide.
- Communications and Public Education: Educate the broader public on the importance and effectiveness of secure storage. Support the research, development, and testing of different public health messaging campaigns to increase secure storage. Organize and create materials to increase education and awareness of secure storage.
- Engage those who’ve lost loved ones to suicide: Connect and build relationships with people who have lost loved ones to firearm suicide or who have personal connection to the issue. Ensure their voices are heard and to understand how to increase support to survivors. Support survivors in sharing their stories to create change.
- Community Participation: You’ll represent the Oregon Alliance in your community, across the state, and in a variety of roles, coalitions, and/or events, which may include evening and weekend work.
About You
You care about Oregon and Oregonians. You believe change is possible and a new approach to firearm safety and policy can make our state a stronger, safer place. Ideally, you:
Bring strong communication skills: You can communicate effectively to people from different areas of the state and across different racial, ethnic, class and educational backgrounds. You are inspiring and able to bring people into a cause. Even when you strongly disagree with someone, you are able to focus on listening and understanding their point of view. You don’t mind reaching out or cold calling someone you haven’t met before.
Understand historic and structural racism: You understand, or have a willingness to learn, about how gun violence is connected to historic racism and is rooted in structural inequality. You care about treating all people fairly.
Support broader, root cause issues: We know we can prevent gun violence and gun suicides. But it will take all of us. To be truly effective, we must work across issues as we know gun violence and gun suicide is deeply connected to a lack of resources in our communities.

Valued Experience
Strongly prefer a candidate currently living in Eastern, Southern, or Central Oregon or a rural area of Oregon.
A degree is not required for this role. Prior experience working across divisive topics is helpful but not required.
We will provide comprehensive onboarding training to support the right person in understanding and eventually leading program planning and evaluation work.
Salary and Benefits
The job title and salary range will be determined based on the applicant's individual level of experience. For a Program Manager: minimum of 3 years experience at salary range of $48,000-$60,000. For a Director: a senior leader with comparable experience: $65,000-$80,000.

Oregon Alliance for Gun Safety staff work remotely but may be required to occasionally travel for work. The person in this role will be expected to participate in in-person activities in their community and surrounding communities. This role will also require some evening and weekend work.
